Another region in the country has declared a flu epidemic: Burgas. From January 22 to January 30 inclusive, temporary anti-epidemic measures will take effect in the region to limit the spread of influenza and acute respiratory diseases.
Key measures include the suspension of in-person classes and extracurricular activities. An exception will be made only for academic competitions, which must be conducted with a strictly limited number of students in classrooms and a minimum distance of 1.5 meters.
Restrictions are also being introduced for hospital visits, as well as for specialized institutions and residential social services for children and adults. During the period these measures are in effect, preventive check-ups, mandatory immunizations, and re-immunizations are suspended.
Anti-epidemic measures remain in effect in two other regions. In Varna, the duration has been extended; originally introduced for the period of January 14–20, the restrictions will now remain in place until January 26 due to continued high morbidity rates. In Dobrich, the flu epidemic remains in effect until the end of the current week.
Health authorities remind the public that the morbidity threshold for declaring a flu epidemic varies by region. It is determined based on population size and registered cases of influenza and acute respiratory infections over the last 10 years. For example, in Gabrovo, the epidemic level is 332.3 cases per 10,000 people; in Blagoevgrad, it is 418.6 per 10,000; and in Sofia, it is 203.9 per 10,000 people.
Data from the National Health Information System for the period of January 12–18 show that a total of 121,254 people in the country were examined for influenza and acute respiratory diseases, with 4,194 of them requiring hospitalization.
The most affected age group remains children aged 5 to 14, with 7,670.09 cases registered per 100,000 people. This is followed by children aged 0 to 4, with 6,108.88 cases per 100,000 people.
