Three patients have been given a second chance at life after the relatives of a 41-year-old man made the difficult but noble decision to donate his organs. The organ donation process was carried out by a team from St. George University General Hospital in Plovdiv, coordinated by Dr. Doncho Tashkov and Deputy Coordinator Dr. Emil Mitkovski, as reported by the Medical Supervision Executive Agency.

As a result of the donation, a team from the Urology Clinic at Alexandrovska University General Hospital, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Dimitrov, transplanted kidneys into two men aged 22 and 57. Under an agreement with Romania, the donor’s liver was transplanted into a 58-year-old patient, as there was no suitable recipient in Bulgaria.

According to reports from the medical facilities, the patients are in good general condition and remain under medical observation in intensive care. Due to medical reasons, no other organs were utilized for transplantation.

This marks the eleventh kidney transplant at Alexandrovska Hospital since the beginning of the year—nine from deceased donors and two from living donors.

The Ministry of Health and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency expressed their condolences to the donor’s family and gratitude for their decision to save human lives, as well as appreciation to the teams that performed the transplants.
