The Ministry of Health is beginning the construction of a national information database for individuals with malignant neoplasms and carcinoma in situ, which will replace the current cancer registry with a modern electronic system.<\/p>\n\n
In essence, the new platform will represent an upgraded and modernized version of the registry, where structured data on patients with oncological diseases will be collected and stored.<\/p>\n\n
While the old registry included information on 28 medical indicators, the new system will cover over 120, with the possibility of further expansion. Data will be entered according to international standards and nomenclatures, in compliance with European requirements and the recommendations of the European Network of Cancer Registries. This will allow Bulgaria to fully participate in the European Health Data Space and the European Cancer Information System.<\/p>\n\n
The database will contain information regarding the diagnosis, stage of the disease, treatment administered, therapeutic response, follow-up, and the vital status of patients. Data will be submitted electronically by oncology committees and all healthcare facilities that perform diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases.<\/p>\n\n
The goal is for the country to have complete, timely, and comparable information on cancer, which is key for planning health policies, setting standards, and allocating resources within the system.<\/p>\n\n
The collection of data will also allow for tracking the entire patient journey \u2013 from diagnosis to treatment and survival \u2013 as well as the introduction of quality indicators for outcome assessment.<\/p>\n\n
The new database will be part of the National Health Information System and will be administered by an expert structure within the National Center of Public Health and Analyses. The collection and processing of information will be carried out in compliance with personal data protection requirements.<\/p>\n\n
The registry will not be public. The data will be used for national analyses and the improvement of patient care, while only aggregated results will be published for the general public. Each patient will have access to their own information through their electronic health record.<\/p>\n\n
To implement the system, regulatory changes have already been made to Ordinance No. 6 of 2018 regarding the “Medical Oncology” medical standard. Algorithms for data collection have been created, along with a new module in the National Health Information System that will ensure the exchange of information between healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n\n
The ordinance is expected to enter into force six months after its publication, meaning that the actual entry of data could begin by August at the latest.<\/p>\n\n
With the establishment of this system, Bulgaria is taking a step toward more modern, digital, and transparent management of information regarding oncological diseases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
