Whey\u2014a byproduct of cheese production traditionally used as animal feed\u2014is now becoming a key ingredient in foods targeted at individuals looking to prevent muscle mass loss.<\/p>\n\n
Data from the consulting firm StoneX show that the price of whey protein concentrate with 80% content (WPC 80) has increased by nearly 90% over the past year, reaching approximately \u20ac20,000 per ton\u2014significantly higher than the price increases seen in other dairy products such as milk powder and cheese.<\/p>\n\n
While factors such as an aging population and increased health awareness also play a role, interviews with industry companies indicate that the primary driver of demand is the boom in GLP-1 weight-loss medications.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cThe strong demand for whey proteins, further intensified by the GLP-1 trend, is something the industry must address,\u201d says Luis Cubel of Arla Foods Ingredients. \u201cThe question is whether there are still untapped resources that we can develop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
Dairy giants such as Arla Foods and FrieslandCampina are already expanding their production capacity, while food companies are increasing their offerings of high-protein products\u2014such as Danone’s Oikos yogurt and Bel Group’s Babybel Protein.<\/p>\n\n
Experts note that users of these medications are actively seeking protein to compensate for the loss of muscle mass\u2014a side effect of rapid weight loss.<\/p>\n\n
Dairy Farmers of America, the largest dairy cooperative in the US, recently launched a new product\u2014cottage cheese with added whey and 18 grams of protein per serving.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cWe are observing a real boom in the demand for dairy proteins,\u201d says Kristen Coady of the company.<\/p>\n\n
Online retailer iHerb is also reporting a sharp increase in products related to GLP-1 therapies. Consumers\u2014especially women\u2014are increasingly looking for supplements to prevent muscle loss.<\/p>\n\n
According to analysts, the industry still lacks sufficient capacity to meet the demand for high-quality whey proteins.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cThere is a lack of infrastructure to produce what the market demands,\u201d says John Lancaster of StoneX.<\/p>\n\n
In response, FrieslandCampina is investing heavily in high-quality whey processing, including the acquisition of the American company Wisconsin Whey Protein and the expansion of production in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n
Lactalis Ingredients also sees enormous potential: \u201cDairy proteins remain the highest quality on the market, but alternatives will be sought to meet the growing demand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
Due to limited capacity and high prices, the industry is beginning to look for alternative protein sources. There is growing interest in legumes such as peas and lentils, as well as new technologies like precision fermentation.<\/p>\n\n
French startup Verley, which produces protein through mushroom fermentation, describes the impact of GLP-1 as \u201cshocking\u201d for the food sector.<\/p>\n\n
The company Standing Ovation is also developing proteins and expects to launch products on the market this year, with 80% of them focused on high-protein solutions.<\/p>\n\n
However, analysts warn that these technologies are still expensive and cannot replace traditional products on a mass scale.<\/p>\n\n
In addition to price, taste is also proving to be a key factor. \u201cDairy protein is delicious,\u201d says Peter McGuinness of Bel Group. \u201cIn this race for proteins, we are starting to lose exactly that\u2014the taste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
