Australia is on the verge of a historic healthcare breakthrough, as it is expected to become the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem. The story of 39-year-old Chrissy Walters demonstrates how severe this disease can be. After years of trying to conceive, she gave birth to her daughter, but only six months later, she was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer. Despite prolonged treatment, the disease spread, and doctors determined her condition to be terminal.<\/p>\n\n
While Walters fights her battle, her daughter is already part of a new generation that can be protected. In Australia, the HPV vaccine is routinely administered to students aged 12\u201313 as part of the national immunization program.<\/p>\n\n
The HPV virus is the primary cause of cervical cancer \u2013 the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. Nevertheless, it is one of the few types of cancer that can be prevented through vaccination.<\/p>\n\n
In 2006, scientists from the University of Queensland developed the Gardasil vaccine, and just one year later, Australia became the first country with a national HPV immunization program. In 2013, the program was expanded to include boys, who can also be carriers of the virus.<\/p>\n\n
In addition to vaccination, the country implements a modern screening system. Since 2017, a more sensitive HPV test has been used instead of the traditional Pap test, with screenings conducted every five years. Women also have the option to self-collect samples, which facilitates access to diagnostics.<\/p>\n\n
According to World Health Organization criteria, elimination means fewer than four cases per 100,000 people. Currently, Australia reports approximately 6.3 cases per 100,000 women, but the trend is sharply declining.<\/p>\n\n
Data shows that since 1982, both incidence and mortality rates have been halved. Particularly significant is the fact that in 2021, for the first time, no cases were recorded among women under the age of 25.<\/p>\n\n
Despite this progress, challenges remain. Among the indigenous population \u2013 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people \u2013 disease and mortality rates are significantly higher. Experts warn that the elimination of cancer in these groups could be delayed by more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n
Additional risks include the decline in vaccination coverage following the COVID-19 pandemic, higher healthcare costs, and missed school vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n
On a global scale, Australia is already participating in a unique race. Countries such as Sweden and Rwanda have also set ambitious goals for eliminating the disease, while the United Kingdom plans to achieve this by 2040.<\/p>\n\n
According to experts, this is the first instance in which the world is realistically striving for the elimination of a cancer, rather than just its treatment.<\/p>\n\n
