A decline from 452 million in 2025 to 399 million in 2100 is expected\u2014a decrease of 11.7%, amid low birth rates and an aging population. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the general trend, demographic processes in Europe are highly uneven\u2014some countries will continue to grow, while others will lose a significant portion of their population.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of 30 countries analyzed, 18 are expected to report a decline by 2100, with the decrease exceeding one-third of the population in some cases.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most significant declines are projected for:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Latvia (\u201333.9%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lithuania (\u201333.4%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poland (\u201331.6%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greece (\u201330.1%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A substantial decline\u2014over 20%\u2014is also expected in:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bulgaria (\u201328%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Croatia (\u201327%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slovakia (\u201326.7%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Romania (\u201324.3%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Italy (\u201324%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hungary (\u201322.5%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that in some of these countries, approximately every fourth inhabitant will be lost.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the opposite end are countries where growth is expected, primarily due to immigration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest increases are projected for:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Luxembourg (+36.4%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Iceland (+27.1%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malta (+26%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth of over 10% is also expected in:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Switzerland (+16.9%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ireland (+14.6%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Norway (+11.8%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweden (+10%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This variation is mainly due to differences in past and future migration flows, as well as age structure,&#8221; says Tom\u00e1\u0161 Sobotka of the Vienna Institute of Demography.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to experts, countries with low birth rates and an outflow of young people are facing faster aging and a more pronounced demographic decline.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Migration is the only factor that can ensure population growth in Europe,&#8221; adds Dmitri Jdanov from the Max Planck Institute.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the largest economies in the EU, only Spain is expected to see population growth by 2100 (+1.3%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France will remain relatively stable (\u20132.5%), while Germany (\u201310.6%) and especially Italy (\u201324%) will face a significant decline.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain is expected to overtake Italy to become the third most populous country in Europe.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the population decline, the continent will face rapid aging.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 2100:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The share of people over 85 will triple\u2014from 3.2% to 10.8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People over 65 will reach nearly one-third of the population<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The working-age population will decrease significantly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These trends will put serious pressure on healthcare systems, pension funds, and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts warn that demographic changes will require new policies\u2014from encouraging birth rates to managing migration and adapting economies to an aging society.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise, Europe risks not only a population decline but also deep structural changes in society and the labor market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The population of the European Union will decrease by approximately 53 million people by the end of the century, according to the latest Eurostat projections, Euronews reports.
