Health institutions in several European countries are raising the alarm about the so-called “paracetamol challenge” \u2014 an online challenge where teenagers compete to see who can ingest the largest amount of paracetamol, Euronews reports. Although references to this “challenge” have existed since 2015, there is limited evidence of mass participation on social media. Most posts on the subject are from medical professionals and institutions warning of the dangers. <\/p>\n\n
Nevertheless, the Belgian hospital EpiCURA confirmed that it admitted three patients with paracetamol overdoses in February. They were admitted after participating in a similar online competition. Belgium’s Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products issued an official warning. They emphasize that the intake of high doses of paracetamol does not lead to a psychotropic effect but can cause severe damage. <\/p>\n\n
Similar reports are coming from other countries. In Spain, a pediatric nurse from the University Hospital of M\u00e1laga urged parents to talk to their children about the risks and to watch for symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and excessive drowsiness. The Finnish Medicines Agency also stressed the need for young people to be informed about the dangers of improper medication use. <\/p>\n\n
In Portugal, the Pharmaceutical Society warned that such practices represent a “serious health risk,” as paracetamol toxicity can begin before clinical symptoms appear. Overdosing can lead to severe and irreversible liver damage, acute liver failure, the need for a transplant, and even death. In rarer cases, kidney damage may also occur. <\/p>\n\n
According to recommendations, adults should not take more than 4 g of paracetamol daily, with the usual single dose being between 500 mg and 1 g every 4\u20136 hours. For children, the daily dose is calculated based on weight \u2014 usually up to 60 mg per kilogram. <\/p>\n\n
The first symptoms of intoxication include nausea, vomiting, sweating, and fatigue, usually within the first 24 hours. As liver damage progresses, abdominal pain and other serious complications may appear. If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required. <\/p>\n\n
Paracetamol is one of the most widely used medications for pain and fever and is safe when taken correctly.
