This is shown by a new global study published in the medical journal <em>The Lancet<\/em> as part of the large-scale &#8220;Global Burden of Disease 2023&#8221; project, Reuters reports. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the analysis, the number of people with mental illnesses has grown by 95% since 1990, making mental health an increasingly serious challenge for healthcare systems worldwide.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest growth was observed in major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders. Cases of depression increased by 131%, and anxiety disorders by 158%, making them the two most prevalent mental health conditions globally. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Addressing the mental health needs of the global population, especially the most vulnerable groups, is an obligation, not a choice,&#8221; the study authors state.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers define mental disorders as widespread conditions that cause significant suffering, impaired quality of life, and long-term health consequences.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the impact on individuals, mental illnesses have a serious effect on society through reduced productivity, lower labor market participation, and increasing pressure on healthcare and social systems.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women are more affected<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study shows that mental disorders do not affect all groups equally. In 2023, approximately 620 million cases of mental illness were reported among women, while the number for men was 552 million. According to scientists, several factors may explain this difference.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Compared to men, women more frequently experience low self-esteem, higher levels of shame related to physical appearance, as well as higher rates of domestic and sexual violence,&#8221; the authors note. Added to this are biological changes, particularly around pregnancy and childbirth, higher professional workloads, and social inequalities, including gender discrimination. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common mental disorders in women are depression and anxiety. Persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anorexia, and bulimia are also more frequently found in women. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In men, neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders are more prevalent, including attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorders, and autism.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highest burden among teenagers<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highest prevalence of mental health issues was reported among youth aged 15 to 19. According to the authors, this indicates the need for earlier prevention and more targeted support for adolescents.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study identifies childhood sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, and bullying as major risk factors. These are linked to an increased risk of depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, bulimia, and behavioral disorders. However, scientists emphasize that these factors do not fully explain the increase in cases.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, they were responsible for about 18% of healthy years of life lost due to mental illness. According to the authors, the reasons are significantly more complex and involve interactions between genetic factors, biological mechanisms, poverty, social inequalities, wars, pandemics, natural disasters, and climate change. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healthcare systems are falling behind<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although mental illnesses have long been among the leading causes of disability worldwide, experts warn that healthcare systems are failing to meet the growing demand.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is concerning that the increase in the burden of mental disorders has not been accompanied by a corresponding expansion of mental health services globally,&#8221; the authors warn.
