17 medical professionals resigned from the Pulmonology Department at the Pediatrics Hospital; the department continues operations

The team at the Pulmonology Clinic of the “Prof. Ivan Mitev” Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Children’s Diseases in Sofia has submitted a collective resignation. This was announced by the head of the clinic, Dr. Natalia Gabrovska.

According to her, the resignations were filed on March 5 and include the entire department staff—three doctors specializing in pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology, four residents, seven nurses, and three orderlies.

The medical professionals cited accumulated problems in the work environment as the reason for their decision. “The reasons are complex—a toxic climate, intrigue and behind-the-scenes maneuvering, a lack of development opportunities for the young people in the team, financial penalties, and a serious deficit of kindness and empathy—qualities that are mandatory when working with sick children and their parents,” Dr. Gabrovska stated in a social media post.

The director of the medical facility, Dr. Blagomir Zdravkov, commented to BNR that despite the staff’s departure, the clinic has not interrupted its activities. According to him, specialists have been secured to take over patient treatment, although some positions have not yet been filled.

The Pulmonology Clinic handles the treatment of some of the most severe cases of lung disease in children. Some of the departing doctors are currently seeking new job opportunities in Sofia.

Among them are four pediatric pulmonology residents, for whom it is vital that their specialization is not interrupted. The Ministry of Health told BNR that they will assist in finding a solution, and it is expected to become clear within the week how the continuation of their training will be guaranteed.
