Organ Donation in Plovdiv Saves Three Patients

A successful organ donation at St. George University General Hospital in Plovdiv has given a second chance at life to three people, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency announced.

On April 22, 2026, a potential donor was identified—a 48-year-old woman. The process of confirming brain death and the preparation for donation were carried out by a hospital team led by coordinators Dr. Emil Mitkovski and Dr. Daniel Vasilev. The following day, the organ procurements were performed by medical teams from Alexandrovska University Hospital and the Military Medical Academy.

Following the recipient selection process, a team from the Military Medical Academy, led by Prof. Vasil Mihaylov, transplanted a liver into a 31-year-old woman. At Alexandrovska University Hospital, two kidney transplants were also performed on men aged 52 and 54, under the direction of Dr. Aleksandar Timev.

According to information from the Military Medical Academy, the liver transplant patient’s condition is stable—she is conscious, responsive, and has been extubated.

The Ministry of Health, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency, and the Military Medical Academy express their gratitude to the donor’s family for their decision, as well as to all medical teams and emergency centers in Plovdiv and Sofia for the rapid response and coordination that made saving three patients possible.
