The baby with 1 million leukocytes was discharged after a successful transplant at ISUL

The infant, diagnosed with hyperleukocytic leukemia in November 2025, has now been discharged for home treatment following a successful allogeneic transplant performed at University Hospital “Tsaritsa Yoanna – ISUL”. This was reported by the medical institution.

The young patient was admitted in extremely critical condition, with nearly 1 million leukocytes. The only chance for treatment was an allogeneic stem cell transplant, which was performed in March. Her 4-year-old brother became the donor.

This type of transplant utilizes cells from another person—most often a relative or a compatible donor from an international registry. The method is significantly more complex than autologous transplants, but it is crucial for severe and aggressive forms of the disease.

According to Assoc. Prof. Boryana Avramova, MD, head of the clinic, both the child and the donor are in good condition, and the results confirm the successful outcome of the procedure. However, the most important stage lies ahead—bone marrow recovery and careful monitoring for potential complications.

The first 100 days post-transplant are critical. During this period, the child’s condition will be strictly monitored through regular tests and follow-up examinations.

The hospital emphasizes that during the most difficult moment for the little hero, the ISUL teams worked jointly with the intensive care specialists from the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Children’s Diseases “Prof. Ivan Mitev”, which was decisive for her stabilization.

The medical professionals express hope that within the next year, the child will fully overcome the disease and return to a normal way of life.
