New measles outbreaks in the country; the disease primarily affects children

The spread of measles in the country continues to expand, with 25 cases registered to date. Data shows a sharp increase during the period of April 10–14, when almost all new cases were reported.

Alongside the already affected areas, the infection is reaching new regions. Single cases have been identified in Montana, Stara Zagora, and Veliko Tarnovo, with laboratory confirmation of these samples still pending. The situation remains most serious in Vratsa, where the majority of cases are concentrated—18 in total. Two cases have been identified in Lovech, and one in Pleven.

The disease primarily affects children and adolescents. The largest proportion of cases is among school-aged children, followed by younger children in the 1 to 4 age group. A case has also been registered in an infant under 1 year of age. Adults fall ill significantly less often, with only isolated cases reported among individuals over 20 years old.

Weekly data shows some fluctuation—during the last reported week, there were 30 cases in total, which is fewer compared to the previous week. The majority of these are laboratory-confirmed, while the rest are in the process of being verified.

Health authorities continue to track contact persons and assess the risk of wider spread, with the primary focus remaining on containing the infection and the timely identification of new cases.
