Ministry of Health: Emergency Teams in Bulgaria Have Naloxone Antidote Supplies for a Year Ahead

All Emergency Medical Care Centers across the country now have the Naloxone antidote, used for opioid overdoses, according to the Ministry of Health.

Following a donation from two companies, the available quantities have reached over 2,400 ampoules, ensuring that emergency teams can respond adequately in critical situations for at least one year ahead.

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that acts quickly in the event of an opioid overdose by restoring breathing and neutralizing the effects of the substances. The Ministry of Health emphasizes that its availability is of particular importance given the growing risks associated with the use of potent synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.

At the same time, the Ministry notes that the provision of the antidote cannot rely solely on donations. In this regard, work is underway to create a sustainable mechanism through which the state can guarantee regular supplies and broader access to the medication.

In parallel, possibilities for expanding its use outside of hospital care are being explored, including the introduction of forms such as nasal sprays, which would allow for faster and easier administration in emergencies.
