Export ban on diabetes and chronic disease medications extended for two more months

The caretaker Minister of Health, Assoc. Prof. Mikhail Okoliyski, has issued a new order for a temporary ban on the export of certain medications, according to the published document.

The restriction covers medications for the treatment of diabetes, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, osteoporosis, renal failure, and certain types of anemia. The order includes five main groups of medications: insulins and analogues, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors, aminosalicylic acid and related agents, preparations affecting bone structure and mineralization, as well as other anti-anemic drugs.

The reasons for the measure are related to irregular supplies, identified shortages, and refusals by warehouses, as well as increased consumption due to a higher number of patients. For some of the medications, a temporary suspension of sales has also been reported until mid-2027.

The ban is for a period of two months and will be in effect from March 25 to May 26, 2026. The objective is to ensure the availability of medications for Bulgarian patients.
