The Ministry of Health Proposes Introducing 32 Hours of Health Education in Schools
The Ministry of Health is taking new steps to introduce health education in schools, the department reports.
The topic was discussed at a meeting between the Minister of Health, Assoc. Prof. Mikhail Okoliyski, Deputy Minister Prof. Antonia Dimova, and representatives of the National Food Council. Emphasis was placed on children’s health and the development of sustainable habits from an early age.
As a specific measure, the integration of 32 academic hours of health-related topics into the existing curriculum is being discussed. The Ministry will contribute expertise and develop materials on topics such as healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, and addiction prevention.
The Ministry of Health states that coordination with the Ministry of Education and Science will continue, with a joint meeting scheduled to finalize the specific steps.
During the discussion, progress in the quality of food and beverages in the country was also noted, with data showing that 75% of the beverages offered are now without added sugar.
“The health of the nation begins with the informed choices of our children,” stated Assoc. Prof. Okoliyski. The goal is for students to build lasting health habits through a more systematic approach to education.
