MMA performs second liver transplant in two weeks

Specialists from the Military Medical Academy (MMA) performed a new liver transplant—the second within the last two weeks, according to a statement from the hospital.

The recipient is a 39-year-old woman with acute liver failure, and the donor is a 42-year-old woman. The surgery was conducted in the late hours of March 9 and was completed successfully with minimal blood loss.

“The patient is currently in stable condition, extubated, conscious, and responsive,” reported Prof. Vasil Mihaylov, head of the transplant team.

The transplant was made possible following a donor situation at the Pirogov Emergency Hospital, where the organ procurement was performed by Dr. Ivan Ivanov and Dr. Radoslav Kostadinov.

The management of the MMA expressed their gratitude to the donor’s relatives for their decision, as well as to the medical teams involved in all stages of the process. Gratitude was also extended to the Medical Supervision Executive Agency, the donor coordinator Dr. Mina Vapireva, and the on-duty team at Pirogov for the excellent coordination in realizing the transplant.
