Argentina officially left the World Health Organization

Argentina has officially terminated its membership in the World Health Organization, one year after the country submitted its formal notice of withdrawal, Euronews reports. The news was confirmed by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno on the social network X.

“Today, Argentina’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization takes effect, one year after the official notification,” he stated, specifying that the decision was communicated to the UN Secretary-General on March 17, 2025. The procedure was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, which provide for a one-year period for entry into force.

President Javier Milei’s government justified the decision by the need for greater independence in health policymaking. Despite the departure, authorities emphasize that the country will continue to develop international cooperation through bilateral and regional partnerships.

According to the official position, the goal is to ensure “full sovereignty and the capacity to independently determine health policy.”

The decision is linked to deep disagreements between the Argentine government and the WHO, particularly regarding the management of the COVID-19 pandemic. President Milei has repeatedly issued sharp criticisms of the organization, accusing it of improper actions during the global health crisis.

The withdrawal sparked criticism from health experts in the country, who described the measure as risky for the healthcare system. For its part, the government defended the decision, arguing that it will provide greater flexibility and efficiency in decision-making.

Argentina’s move comes amid similar positions from the United States, where President Donald Trump’s administration also criticized the WHO for its management of global health crises and left the organization earlier this year.
