Aesthetic dermatology is a medical activity that requires high qualifications, clear standards, and strict adherence to safety rules. This position was shared by specialists from the Bulgarian Association of Aesthetic Dermatologists (BAAD) during a seminar for journalists titled “Aesthetic Dermatology – Ethics, Standards, Safety,” held at the Bulgarian Medical Association building.

The event was opened by the Deputy Chairman of the BMA, Dr. Nikolay Branzalov, who congratulated the association on the establishment of the medical standard for skin and venereal diseases. According to him, compliance with the requirements of evidence-based medicine and ethical principles is key for both patients and physicians. He also warned against attempts by non-medical persons to enter this field.

The Chairperson of the Board of BAAD, Dr. Rositsa Dencheva, emphasized that the adoption of the new medical standard in 2025 introduces clear rules for injectable and regenerative therapies, as well as for laser procedures and energy-based devices. According to her, this creates a stricter medical framework for performing aesthetic procedures and increases patient safety.

According to specialists, the demand for aesthetic procedures worldwide is growing rapidly, with nearly 30 million interventions performed in 2024. In this context, medical qualifications and patient awareness are becoming increasingly important.

Dr. Katya Paskova from the BAAD leadership explained that most adverse reactions following such procedures are mild and temporary—redness, swelling, pain, or hematomas, which usually subside within 24–72 hours. According to her, safety is based on three key factors: a qualified physician, performing procedures in a medical clinic, and using certified products.

The association further emphasized that injectable aesthetic procedures should only be performed by physicians with the appropriate qualifications—dermatologists and plastic surgeons—as they require in-depth knowledge of anatomy, dermatology, and complication management.

“The skin is a complex organ with its own structure and functions. Procedures may seem minor, but mistakes can be major,” noted Dr. Mihail Mihaylov from the BAAD Board. According to him, the training of specialists includes six years of medical education, four years of specialization, and continuous additional training.

The Bulgarian Association of Aesthetic Dermatologists has over 120 specialist members. The organization works to establish high medical standards and protect patients, while its youth section, BAED Youth, supports the development of dermatology residents.
