Doctors from UMBAL "Pulmed" Removed a 13-Kilogram Ovarian Tumor from an 18-Year-Old Girl
A team of obstetrician-gynecologists, anesthesiologists, and surgical specialists at UMBAL “Pulmed” – Plovdiv performed a successful highly specialized surgery to remove a 13-kilogram ovarian tumor from an 18-year-old patient. This was reported by the medical institution.
The young girl was admitted to the medical facility as an emergency with abdominal pain. The patient was examined by the physician on duty, Dr. Shentova, who identified a large formation in the abdominal area. Following a consultation with a gastroenterologist and the completion of necessary tests, it became clear that the case involved a voluminous tumor formation requiring urgent surgical intervention.
According to the doctors, the girl had never visited a gynecologist, as she believed that as a young woman who was not sexually active, it was not necessary. Over the past month, however, her abdomen began to visibly swell, and the pain gradually intensified.
The surgery was successfully performed by a team consisting of Dr. Goran Radinski and Dr. Mihaela Gospodinova, with the participation of surgical midwife Valentina Aleksandrova, anesthesiologist Dr. Petya Pilafova, and anesthesia nurse Daniela Topalova. Thanks to rapid diagnosis, good coordination, and teamwork, the intervention was successful, and the young patient is recovering under medical supervision.
Specialists from UMBAL “Pulmed” emphasize that this case is an important reminder to young women and their parents: preventive gynecological examinations should not be postponed. The absence of complaints does not mean the absence of a problem, and an ultrasound examination and consultation with a specialist can detect serious conditions at an early stage. They remind that some gynecological diseases often progress without clear symptoms or pain until an advanced stage.
“Care for women’s health should begin at an early age. Prevention can avert severe complications and, in many cases, saves lives,” the medical professionals stated firmly.
