Dr. Blagomir Zdravkov wins the competition for director of the children's hospital in Burgas

With an overall score of 5.88, Dr. Blagomir Zdravkov—the current director of the “Prof. Ivan Mitev” Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Children’s Diseases—has been ranked first in the competition for the manager of the new Children’s Hospital in Burgas, the municipality announced.

Dr. Toma Tomov, an infectious disease specialist from “Aleksandrovska” University Hospital, ranked second with a score of 5.63. Anesthesiologist Dr. Ventsislav Dimov placed third with 5.19, and economist Dimitar Pomakov placed fourth with 5.02.

The competition was conducted in three stages by a committee selected by the Burgas Municipal Council. The final stage—interviews with the four candidates—took place on March 10. The final score was based on the management program for the “St. Anastasia” Specialized Children’s Hospital presented by the candidates for the next three years and their performance during the interview.

The committee was chaired by municipal councilor Dr. Lidia Stefanova. Other participants included Dr. Georgi Pazderov, Director of RHI-Burgas; Dr. Zheni Stoichkova, Chairperson of the Regional Branch of the Bulgarian Medical Association-Burgas; and Prof. Tsvetomir Lukanov, Head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany, who joined online.

During the final stage, candidates presented their management programs and resolved case studies related to the administration of the medical facility, including the issue of medical specialist shortages and recruitment.

“This project is new for the country and will attract people dedicated to the cause who have decided to devote themselves to pediatric medicine,” commented Dr. Zdravkov. According to him, the children’s hospital in Burgas is “one of the most meaningful investments in health infrastructure in recent years.”

Following the conclusion of the competition, the committee must propose the selected candidate to the Burgas Municipal Council. Dr. Zdravkov is expected to present his management program to the councilors on March 17.
