Dr. Branzalov: New Codes for Chronic Kidney Disease Will Facilitate Diagnosis and Treatment

The new ICD codes for all stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) have already been included in Ordinance No. 8 on dispensary care, but for them to actually take effect, they must also be reflected in the National Framework Agreement. This was stated by the Chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Association, Dr. Nikolay Branzalov.

“Without a voted budget, there can be no National Framework Agreement, and for the new codes to become a reality, they must be inscribed in it,” he emphasized.

During a press conference, it became clear that CKD is now officially recognized in our country with separate codes for the different stages of the disease. According to the Chairperson of the Association of Patients with Kidney Diseases, Hristina Nikolova, this will allow for earlier and more precise diagnosis, as well as the timely initiation of treatment.

Nephrologist Prof. Boris Bogov pointed out that the disease progresses “silently” and is often detected at an advanced stage. According to him, the introduction of indicators such as eGFR and UACR will enable general practitioners to monitor patients more effectively, especially those with diabetes.

According to Assoc. Prof. Lyubomir Kirov from the National Association of General Practitioners, Bulgaria is among the first countries with a clearly defined algorithm for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of CKD, as well as conditions for screening.

Experts emphasized that the new classification will also support the creation of a national patient registry and the organization of effective screening programs. In Europe, approximately 9% of the population suffers from CKD, while in Bulgaria, the share reaches 13–14%.
