In the Name of Life: Three Hospitals Save a 9-Year-Old Child. The girl was saved thanks to the collaborative efforts of three leading pediatric hospital structures in the country – UMBAL “Saint George” – Plovdiv, the National Cardiology Hospital, and UMBALSM “N. I. Pirogov,” as reported by “Pirogov.”

The child was admitted as an emergency to the Clinic of Pediatric Surgery in Plovdiv following acute pulmonary hemorrhaging. Due to the severity of her condition, teams from “Pirogov” and pediatric cardiologists from the NCH joined the treatment. During transport to Sofia, the patient was in critical condition, and pediatric anesthesiologists and surgeons at “Pirogov” undertook emergency stabilization to control the initial bleeding.

Following preliminary coordination between the hospitals, a highly specialized angiographic procedure was performed at the NCH. The multidisciplinary team, led by Prof. Anna Kaneva and Assoc. Prof. Elisaveta Levunlieva (NCH), Assoc. Prof. Bogdan Mladenov and Prof. Hristo Shivachev (“Pirogov”), along with anesthesiologists, cardiologists, surgeons, nurses, and laboratory technicians, successfully localized and treated a pathological blood vessel in the lung, thereby stopping the bleeding.

The patient was returned to “Pirogov” for observation and follow-up care, and just a few days later, she was discharged—fully recovered and healthy.

“This story is about the moments when doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians from different hospitals think and act as a single organism in the name of life. We promise to always do so whenever necessary, because our cause is shared,” stated representatives from “Pirogov.”
