Infant with severe leukemia successfully undergoes bone marrow transplant

The infant, diagnosed in November 2025 with hyperleukocytic leukemia, has reached a key milestone in her treatment after successfully undergoing an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. This was reported by the Tsaritsa Yoanna – ISUL University Hospital.

At the end of last week, the team from the Clinic of Pediatric Clinical Hematology and Oncology performed the intervention, with the child’s 4-year-old brother serving as the donor. The procedure was successful, and both the donor and the patient are in good condition.

“Now begins the most critical phase of the transplantation process—for the new bone marrow to start functioning, which we expect within the next 30–40 days,” explained the head of the clinic, Assoc. Prof. Boryana Avramova.

Mihaela’s case was exceptionally severe; at the most critical moment, the child was stabilized thanks to the joint efforts of the physicians from the Clinic of Pediatric Clinical Hematology and Oncology and the team from the Intensive Care Unit of the Prof. Ivan Mitev Specialised Hospital for Active Treatment of Children.

The hospital specifies that an allogeneic transplant—where the donor is another person, most often a close relative—is a significantly more complex procedure, but in such cases, it remains the only chance for a complete cure.
