Medical University – Plovdiv Celebrates Its 80th Anniversary with a Solemn Event

The 80th anniversary of the Medical University – Plovdiv was marked with a solemn event at the PlantaSYST Center of Plant Systems Biology and Biotechnology.

The celebration was attended by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, who congratulated the academic community and students on their achievements over the years.
“The Medical University in Plovdiv has established itself among the leaders in the development of our country’s healthcare system—by training knowledgeable, capable, and motivated specialists dedicated to the nation’s health,” the Head of State said in his greeting.

The President expressed his appreciation to the faculty for preserving and building upon university traditions through the introduction of modern technologies and innovative approaches in medical education. He also visited the Innovation Fair, where the faculties presented their developments, and received a 3D-printed heart from the Student Council stand.

The Minister of Health, Assoc. Prof. Silvi Kirilov, also addressed the celebrants, emphasizing the high quality of education and research at the university and expressing confidence that it will continue to develop its traditions and prestige.

The Rector, Prof. Dr. Angel Uchikov, presented the President and the Minister with jubilee plaques for their contribution to the development of medical science and higher education.
“Today we pay tribute to the founders—people of vision, courage, and wisdom who created an institution that has stood the test of time. We thank everyone who has been part of the university’s successes over the years,” Prof. Uchikov said in his speech.

The Director of PlantaSYST, Prof. Tsanko Gechev, presented the Rector with the symbol of the Center, which is the first Center of Excellence in Bulgaria and a nominee in the prestigious European Commission competition REGIOSTARS 2025.

The jubilee event was accompanied by a scientific conference, bringing together leading scientists, lecturers, and researchers from the country and abroad, as well as an Innovation Fair, where modern technologies and achievements in medical education were demonstrated.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of state and local authorities, rectors of higher education institutions, and partner organizations.
