New eHealth Feature Gives Patients Control Over Access to Their Medical Records

Users of the eHealth mobile application can now manage who has access to their electronic health records through a new “Access” module, also available on the my.his.bg portal, according to the Ministry of Health.

Until now, full access to health information was primarily limited to general practitioners and medical expert commissions (TELK). With the new functionality, patients can grant access at their discretion to various specialists—such as cardiologists, surgeons, endocrinologists, or dentists—as needed.

Through the system, medical data, including examinations, tests, diagnoses, and prescriptions, can be shared directly in electronic format, eliminating the need for paper documents. This facilitates the treatment process for both patients and physicians.

Control over information remains entirely in the hands of the user. The user can select a specific doctor from a list of specialists containing data on their qualifications and identification numbers. It is also possible for a physician to send an access request, which the patient can then approve or reject.

For every request, the system sends a notification within the application if this feature is activated. For children’s profiles, additional confirmation from a parent or guardian is required.

The new module was developed by Information Services and is part of the expansion of e-healthcare in Bulgaria. The goal is to reduce the administrative burden, limit the use of paper documents, and improve access to medical information while maintaining high security standards.
