New Study: Undiagnosed Heart Failure in Diabetics Can Be Detected Easily
A major study led by UK scientists shows that undiagnosed heart failure can be detected in people with high-risk diabetes through a simple primary care-based approach, Pharmaphorum reports.
The TARTAN-HF study, conducted by the University of Glasgow with funding from pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, found that approximately one in four patients (24.9%) with diabetes and at least one risk factor for heart failure received a diagnosis within six months—despite already being in contact with the healthcare system. In comparison, this proportion was only 1% in the control group.
The model proposed by the researchers involves several sequential steps: an initial consultation with a general practitioner to assess symptoms, a blood test for the NT-proBNP biomarker for screening, and rapid referral for echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound).
The new approach was compared with standard care for diabetic patients in the National Health Service (NHS) among 700 participants enrolled at two hospitals in Glasgow.
According to the researchers, who presented the results at the American College of Cardiology congress, this model allows for earlier detection of heart failure and faster initiation of treatment. This can delay disease progression, extend life, alleviate symptoms, and improve the quality of life for patients.
The approach is aligned with existing NHS practices and aims to direct diagnostic resources where they are most needed, while offering a scalable solution for primary care teams and specialists in cardiology, nephrology, and diabetology.
“The TARTAN-HF results show that a significant number of people with diabetes are living with undiagnosed heart failure,” said Prof. Mark Petrie, a cardiologist from the University of Glasgow and a study investigator.
“These patients carry a heavy burden of symptoms that limit their daily lives and worsen their quality of life,” he added. “The screening process studied is easy to implement in clinical practice and can bring significant benefits to people with diabetes.”
Scientists are currently conducting further analyses to evaluate how early detection of heart failure would impact healthcare costs.
“Delayed diagnosis and treatment of heart failure in people with type 2 diabetes lead to poorer long-term outcomes,” commented Dr. Edward Piper, Medical Director at the UK division of a pharmaceutical company involved in funding the study.
The company added that the results support the strategies of UK health authorities for earlier detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases within the community.
