The Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has entered into a strategic partnership with the San Diego-based biotech firm Replicate Bioscience to develop therapies for cardiometabolic diseases using self-replicating RNA (srRNA) technology, according to global news agencies. The deal is valued at up to $550 million and includes upfront payments and future royalties for the American company. It provides Novo Nordisk with an opportunity to expand its presence in a market estimated to be worth over $100 billion in the long term.

srRNA technology is regarded as a revolution in molecular engineering. Unlike traditional linear mRNA, which degrades rapidly and requires high doses, srRNA contains a built-in self-amplification mechanism. This allows cells to produce many more copies of the encoded information, leading to protein expression up to 1,000 times higher than linear mRNA and up to 100 times higher than standard srRNA. These new therapies can be administered in lower doses, less frequently, and with fewer side effects.

Experts point out that the platform’s versatility is its key strength. It can express a wide range of therapeutic molecules—antigens, antibodies, cytokines, protein agonists, or antagonists. This makes it a promising tool for addressing severe diseases across various fields—from oncology and autoimmune conditions to cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular issues, where durable and systemic solutions are required.
