Over 70,000 prescriptions dispensed in the first two days of 2026

Over 70,000 prescriptions were dispensed in the first two days of 2026. All information systems of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) are operating normally and without interruption in euros. This was stated today by the Governor of the NHIF, Assoc. Prof. Petko Stefanovski, during a meeting of the working group for the introduction of the euro within the institution. He recalled that the NHIF was among the first state structures in Bulgaria whose systems were prepared for operation with the euro as early as the end of March 2025.

During the holidays, the NHIF established a special organization, with experts from the institution, together with a team from “Information Services” JSC, providing 24-hour monitoring of the systems serving the Health Insurance Fund’s activities. To date, no deviations from their usual performance have been identified. All functionalities are operating according to the approved algorithms, with the first successfully processed activities submitted in the early minutes of 2026—at 12:41 AM and 12:58 AM—as reported by NHIF and IS experts to the Fund’s management.

The process of dispensing medicinal products, paid for in full or in part by the NHIF, is carried out through the National Health Information System (NHIS). A cross-check with one of the leading developers of pharmacy software confirmed that the exchange of information between the NHIF and the NHIS is proceeding smoothly and without interruptions. In the event of local difficulties in dispensing medications, pharmacies should contact their software providers. The teams at the NHIF and “Information Services” are ready to provide assistance in resolving any issues that may arise.

The Governor of the NHIF expressed special thanks to the teams of the NHIF and “Information Services” for ensuring a smooth transition from the lev to the euro and for the continuous and stable operation of the Health Insurance Fund’s systems.
