Breast cancer is the most common oncological disease among women in Bulgaria and worldwide. Every year, hundreds of women face this diagnosis, but the good news is that early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

🔍 Why is Prevention Important?

Prevention includes regular check-ups, a healthy lifestyle, and attention to changes in one’s own body. Many cases of breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.

🩺 Methods for Early Detection

  1. Self-examination
    • Perform a monthly breast self-examination after the menstrual cycle.
    • Pay attention to the appearance of a lump, pain, change in shape, or nipple discharge.
  2. Clinical Examination by a Specialist
    • Recommended once a year for women over 20.
  3. Mammography
    • A standard screening method for women over 50.
    • In Bulgaria, it is recommended once every 2 years for women between 50 and 69.
    • Free of charge within the National Screening Program.
  4. Breast Ultrasound
    • Suitable for women with dense breast tissue and those under 40.

Prevention Through Lifestyle

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Physical activity – at least 150 minutes per week
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Avoiding smoking
  • A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain products
