Sofia Municipal Council Approved Leadership Change at Fourth Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment

At an extraordinary session, the Sofia Municipal Council adopted a resolution to change the leadership of the Fourth Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment and its subsequent merger into the Second Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment. The measure is part of a package of actions aimed at cost optimization and restructuring the municipal hospital network in Sofia.

The resolution was approved with 44 votes in favor, one against, and three abstentions. The report, submitted by a group of municipal councilors, provides for the dismissal of the current management of the healthcare facility and the election of a new board of directors.

The new governing body includes Dr. Chavdar Georgiev, Galina Pencheva-Georgieva, and Nikolay Boykov. According to the sponsors, the change is necessary to undertake subsequent measures for the financial stabilization and organizational restructuring of the hospital.

As part of the resolution, the provision of a low-interest loan from the Sofia Municipality is also planned to ensure short-term liquidity and guarantee the normal operation of the healthcare facility until the reform is completed.

However, criticisms were expressed during the debate. The Chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council, Tsvetomir Petrov, pointed out the lack of a sufficiently clear financial analysis regarding the actual state of the hospital and the extent of its liabilities. He described the decision as premature, although he stated his readiness to support it.

For their part, municipal councilors expressed concerns regarding the condition of the staff and the risk of tension among employees. Warnings were also issued that the merger could create additional problems for both healthcare facilities.

Despite the differences in positions, the majority in the council gave the green light to begin the restructuring process.
