Spanish scientists develop corneal implants from fish scales

Scientists from the University of Granada have developed experimental corneal implants from fish scales—a solution that could help overcome the shortage of donor tissue for transplants. The study’s findings show promising results in both laboratory settings and animal experiments. This was reported by Euronews.
The team from the university’s Department of Histology is researching fish scales—a waste product of the fishing industry that is typically discarded. Analysis of scales from carp and other widely consumed fish has allowed scientists to create a biocompatible, transparent, and durable material suitable for repairing damaged corneas.
The cornea—the transparent layer at the front of the eye—is difficult to repair after serious damage because it has no direct blood supply. Consequently, in many cases, transplantation remains the only treatment option, and the shortage of donor tissue continues to be a serious problem.
“It is necessary to develop new effective regeneration methods that do not depend on organ donation,” states Prof. Miguel Alaminos, a professor of histology at the university and one of the lead authors of the study.
The results were published in the scientific journal Materials & Design. According to the scientists, detailed analysis of the scale structure allowed for the creation of a biomaterial with characteristics suitable for corneal restoration. Conducted laboratory tests and animal experiments show good functional results.
In addition to the medical benefits, researchers highlight a practical advantage—the material is inexpensive and easily accessible. Fish scales are a byproduct of the fishing industry, and converting them into raw material for medical implants could create new economic value.
“This material is easy to obtain and inexpensive, which could also support the development of the fishing sector,” notes Prof. Ingrid Garzón from the university and a researcher at the Biosanitary Research Institute.
The study was funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.
The scientists emphasize that the results are preliminary so far. While laboratory and animal tests have shown good potential, clinical trials in humans are forthcoming—a process that can take years and requires strict regulatory procedures. Nevertheless, the research demonstrates that fish scales can be transformed into a biomaterial capable of restoring the cornea—a potential new opportunity in a field where the shortage of donor tissues remains a major challenge.
