The Council of Ministers Adopted a National Program for the Prevention of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections
The Council of Ministers approved the National Program for the Prevention of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2026-2030. Its adoption creates conditions for providing targeted preventive services among various population groups, according to the government press office.
The program outlines a range of activities, including voluntary counseling and HIV testing for at-risk groups, educational initiatives for medical professionals and various social groups, a national information campaign, and support for people living with HIV.
The primary objective is to reduce new cases of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and urogenital chlamydia. The document also aims to strengthen national reference laboratories for virological, microbiological, and immunological diagnostics, as well as to expand the network of clinics for anonymous and free HIV and STI counseling and testing.
Implementation of the program is expected to improve communication with vulnerable groups and the general public regarding prevention and prophylaxis, reduce stigma and discrimination, and provide more effective support for individuals living with HIV. Emphasis is also placed on enhancing the quality and utilization of data on sexually transmitted infections and developing the national information system in this field.
The National Program is based on the World Health Organization’s Regional Action Plans for Europe for ending AIDS, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections for the period 2022-2030. It also aligns with the Global Health Sector Strategies, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the National Development Programme “Bulgaria 2030,” and the National Health Strategy 2030.
