The Council of Ministers adopted a decree approving changes to the 2025 budget of the Ministry of Health, increasing the capital of four state medical institutions – Lozenets University Hospital, Tsaritsa Yoanna – ISUL University Hospital, N. I. Pirogov Emergency Hospital, and the Prof. Boycho Boychev Specialized University Hospital for Orthopedics. This was announced by the government press office.

The capital increase is intended for the purchase of medical apparatus, equipment, and renovation activities. The largest cash contribution – 2,933,400 BGN – is for Lozenets University Hospital. For Tsaritsa Yoanna – ISUL University Hospital, 1,049,885 BGN is allocated, for the Prof. Boycho Boychev Specialized University Hospital for Orthopedics – 815,400 BGN, and for N. I. Pirogov Emergency Hospital – 2,608,882 BGN.

The funds for Lozenets will be used for the construction of a hybrid operating room with a mobile hybrid C-arm X-ray system and an intraoperative navigation system for the vascular surgery department. The project aims to introduce modern methods in vascular surgery and improve the quality of healthcare services provided, in accordance with the national health strategy and current strategic documents in the sector.

The capital increase for ISUL will be directed toward engineering and construction-assembly activities to enhance the security of the hospital’s power supply. The project envisages bringing the electrical system and backup power into compliance with regulatory requirements for a zero-category facility, which will ensure the continuity of the treatment process and higher quality of medical services.

The funds for the Prof. Boycho Boychev Specialized University Hospital for Orthopedics will be used for the purchase and commissioning of two medical steam sterilizers (autoclaves). The investment will improve the operation of the hospital’s sterilization unit and provide the necessary sterile items for all operating and treatment units, which is key to the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections.

The funding for Pirogov is intended for the internal reconstruction of the emergency department – at levels 0.00 and -3.20 – in part of the existing emergency admission building. The implementation of the project will provide a modern facility for diagnosis and treatment and better working conditions for medical specialists, and is expected to contribute to improving the functioning of the hospital care system in the country.
