The government has updated the project for the St. Anastasia Children's Hospital in Burgas.
The Council of Ministers revoked its 2023 decision approving the establishment of the St. Anastasia Multi-profile Hospital for Active Treatment of Children’s Diseases in Burgas and adopted a new decision with updated project parameters, according to the government press office.
The change is due to objective circumstances arising during the project’s implementation, including appeals of public procurement tenders, which prevented its completion within the originally scheduled timeframe, as well as an application for changes to the approved structure and number of beds at the healthcare facility.
According to the updated project, the children’s hospital will provide medical services in 27 medical specialties across 26 structures, with a total capacity of 142 beds. Plans include the opening of clinics and laboratories, such as an Imaging Diagnostics Clinic, a Clinical Laboratory, and laboratories for clinical microbiology, transfusion hematology, general and clinical pathology, and clinical virology, as well as clinics for pediatric pulmonology and phthisiatry, pediatric clinical hematology and oncology, and pediatric neurology.
The Pediatrics Clinic will include departments for pediatric cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and metabolic diseases, rheumatology, nephrology, and hemodialysis. The hospital’s structure also includes departments for pediatric surgery, orthopedics and traumatology, and maxillofacial surgery for patients aged 0 to 18.
The healthcare facility will also feature a department for pediatric anesthesiology and intensive care, a department for physical and rehabilitation medicine, as well as specialized departments for ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology (ENT), and infectious diseases for patients up to 18 years of age. A specialized pediatric emergency department and a hospital pharmacy are also planned.
The primary goal of the project remains unchanged: to provide timely, sufficient, and high-quality hospital care for children in accordance with modern medical standards and the health needs of the population in the Burgas region.
According to a comprehensive assessment by the Medical Supervision Executive Agency, conducted in accordance with the law and the National Health Map, the healthcare facility meets the regional medical care needs for the requested specialties. Within the procedure under the Medical Facilities Act, an opinion was also received from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), stating that the activities can be funded provided the established financial parameters for contracting are met.
The healthcare facility added that the final formation of the hospital team is pending to reach the final registration stage. The staff selection process has been underway for several months, with the application period for administrative positions already closed. Meetings with candidates for doctors and medical specialists are currently being held. On December 22, 2025, a competition for the manager of the children’s hospital was announced, with a deadline for submitting documents by 5:00 PM on February 10, 2026.
