The Military Medical Academy expands its air medical evacuation capabilities

The Military Medical Academy now possesses new highly specialized equipment that significantly increases the capacity for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients, the medical institution reports.

Five complete sets of equipment have been purchased, including vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, and oxygen cylinders, as well as additional equipment such as defibrillators and suction pumps. These provide the necessary conditions for intensive care and resuscitation during long-distance transport.

With the new equipment, the Military Medical Academy can simultaneously perform air evacuation for up to five patients in critical condition. The equipment is certified for use on board aircraft and allows for rapid installation in emergency situations.

The medical institution emphasizes that the MMA is the only hospital in the country that possesses both the necessary equipment and specially trained medical teams for this type of activity. In coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, they can respond to disasters, accidents, and other crisis situations requiring the rapid transport of casualties.

According to Professor Lyubomir Aleksiev, Head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine, the new equipment significantly enhances the capabilities for providing medical assistance in extreme conditions. He added that the teams regularly conduct training flights under various scenarios to maintain a high level of readiness.

Air medical evacuation is a key element of modern emergency systems, as it allows for rapid transport from hard-to-reach areas and ensures continuous medical care during the flight.
