Two antibiotics for children are now available free of charge
Two antibiotics for the home treatment of children up to 7 years of age with acute infectious diseases will be covered by the NHIF as of today, July 8, 2025, the health fund announced.
The two antibiotics are intended for the treatment of 26 of the most common infections in young children – upper respiratory tract infections:
- sinusitis and pharyngitis,
- lower respiratory tract inflammation – pneumonia,
- skin and soft tissue infections.
The medications are dispensed only by prescription and according to the general procedure for medicinal products for the treatment of acute conditions.
The NHIF management reminds that in order for doctors to prescribe and pharmacies to dispense the antibiotics free of charge, they must update their software. The national system integrator, Information Services, assured the NHIF that the NHIS and the NHIF system will be ready.
Negotiations are underway with a representative of the Marketing Authorization Holder to contract a third antibiotic. An application has been submitted to the National Council on Prices and Reimbursement of Medicinal Products, which has also been received by the NHIF, for the inclusion of an antiviral medicinal product. The application is currently under review.
