Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign Begins
On April 5, 2026, on the Christian holiday of Palm Sunday, the traditional spring campaign for free and voluntary blood donation “Light a Candle – Give Life!” will be launched. The initiative will continue through the Bright Week following the Resurrection of Christ, according to the Bulgarian Red Cross.
The campaign is organized by the National Center for Transfusion Hematology, the Ministry of Health, and the Bulgarian Red Cross, with the support of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It has been held for nearly 20 years and aims to encourage voluntary blood donation during a period when the need for blood and blood products remains high.
In Sofia, on Palm Sunday, temporary blood donation centers will be opened near the Sveti Sedmochislenitsi Church (at the 6th Primary School “Graf Ignatiev”, 16B Shesti Septemvri St.) and the Pokrov Bogorodichen Church, where donors can participate between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Volunteers from the Sofia organization of the BRC and mobile teams from the National Center for Transfusion Hematology will be on-site to assist.
In Pleven, the initiative will also take place on April 5, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, in the building adjacent to the Sveta Paraskeva Church.
The campaign will continue in the following days, taking place on April 16 at the Faculty of Theology and the Sveta Nedelya Church, and on April 19 at the Rozhdestvo Hristovo Church in the Mladost district.
The organizers emphasize that blood donation is an act of empathy and solidarity that can save a human life. During the holidays, the need for blood does not decrease, and every donor can help patients in need of treatment.
