WHO approves new oral polio vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted prequalification to a new oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2), the UN health agency’s press office announced. The decision expands global vaccine supplies and strengthens international efforts to contain outbreaks caused by type 2 poliovirus, as well as to accelerate the process of final disease eradication.

Prequalification status certifies that the vaccine meets international standards for quality, safety, and efficacy, allowing it to be purchased and distributed through UN public procurement systems, including UNICEF. This creates the conditions for its widespread application in national immunization programs and poliovirus distribution control across various countries.

The nOPV2 vaccine is intended for active immunization across all age groups and is authorized for emergency use during outbreaks, in accordance with the requirements of the WHO and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

The product is available in 20- and 50-dose vials and has a shelf life of 24 months when stored at temperatures down to –20°C. Additionally, it can be stored for up to six months at temperatures between +2°C and +8°C, providing significant operational flexibility for immunization programs. In accordance with the WHO multi-dose vial policy, opened vials can be used for up to 28 days, contributing to more efficient vaccine utilization during rapid response outbreak campaigns.
