After a year of upheaval, scientists see encouraging signals for mRNA cancer vaccines
Following a difficult year for mRNA technology research, scientists are again seeing encouraging signs that cancer vaccines based on this technology could become a real therapy. CNN reports.
The story of 67-year-old Vita Sarah Blechner from New York illustrates this potential. In March 2020, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer—one of the deadliest oncological diseases, where barely 1 in 10 patients survives more than two years.
Seeking treatment, she joined an experimental study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she received a personalized mRNA vaccine created specifically based on her tumor. Six years later, she is alive and shows no signs of the disease.
How mRNA cancer vaccines work
The technology uses messenger RNA (mRNA), which “trains” the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. Unlike vaccines against viruses, the challenge here is greater because cancer originates from the body’s own cells.
“The immune system is programmed to recognize viruses as foreign, but cancer is part of ourselves,” explains Dr. Vinod Balachandran, the study’s lead researcher.
Therefore, scientists are developing individual vaccines tailored to the specific tumor mutations of each patient.
Results that offer hope
In a small clinical trial involving 16 patients:
- 8 show a strong immune response
- 7 of them are alive and disease-free after 6 years
“This shows that we can induce a strong and long-lasting immune response even in the most difficult types of cancer,” says Balachandran.
Larger international studies are already underway.
New momentum for research
Following a period of doubt and political pressure on mRNA technologies after the COVID-19 pandemic, recent results are once again boosting interest.
“There are a number of successful early clinical trials,” says Elizabeth Jaffee of Johns Hopkins University.
Meanwhile, the National Cancer Institute announced an initiative to raise $200 million for the development of new cancer vaccines.
Different approaches—personalized and universal
Scientists are working on two main types of vaccines:
- personalized—created individually for each patient
- universal—targeting common characteristics of tumors
Some research shows that even vaccines without a specific targeted mutation can “awaken” the immune system and improve the effect of other therapies.
Challenges and skepticism
Despite the progress, trust in mRNA technologies remains an issue following the pandemic.
“Vaccine skepticism sometimes makes it difficult to recruit patients for clinical trials,” says Dr. Ryan Sullivan.
At the same time, some research funding has been limited, which has delayed certain projects.
What’s next?
Despite the difficulties, experts are optimistic that mRNA vaccines can transform cancer treatment.
“We need a technology that is fast, flexible, and scalable—and right now mRNA seems to be leading the way,” says Balachandran.
Blechner’s story gives a human face to this hope: “I beat the statistics. Every day is a gift,” she says.
