FDA Convenes Expert Panel on Peptides Amid Growing Interest and Safety Concerns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is convening an expert panel to consider the possibility of broader access to certain peptides, amid their growing popularity and ongoing concerns regarding their safety and efficacy. This was reported by Reuters.

The substances under discussion are part of a group of 14 products that the FDA prohibited from production by compounding pharmacies in 2023 under the Joe Biden administration, citing risks related to immunogenicity, toxicity, and contamination.

Despite limited scientific data, peptides are gaining significant popularity, particularly among health and wellness influencers who recommend them for injury recovery, inflammation reduction, and weight loss.

In recent years, they have become increasingly sought after within the fitness community, with interest bolstered by the success of peptide-based weight loss medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.

The FDA’s decision also comes amid public support from U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who recently stated on a podcast that he is a “big fan of peptides” and has used them with “very good effect.”

On July 23, the expert committee will discuss whether to allow the production of several peptides, including:

• BPC-157 – for ulcerative colitis
• KPV – for wound healing and inflammatory conditions
• TB-500 – for tissue repair
• MOTS-c – for obesity and osteoporosis

On the following day, other compounds will be reviewed, including:

• emideltide – for the management of opioid addiction and chronic insomnia
• semax – for cerebral ischemia, migraines, and chronic pain
• epitalon – for the treatment of insomnia

The regulator’s decisions are expected to have a significant impact on access to these substances, which are already widely used but remain subject to limited clinical evaluation.
